The University of Hong Kong, through the high quality of its student intakes and graduates, its influential research outputs, innovative teaching methods, and state-of-the-art supporting facilities, has won a reputation as a world-class comprehensive research university. The University recruits its teaching and research staff internationally, from among the most talented minds in the world, and many of its staff are deeply respected in the global academic community. A good number of its academics and research staff, whose pioneering publications have been widely cited, are ranked among the world's top scientists [please click here for a quick overview of profile indicators showing the achievements of the University].

The University sees its research undertakings and postgraduate programmes as complementary and mutually-reinforcing. Our students and graduates make an important and valued contribution to our research efforts, and we strive continually to upgrade our doctoral and master's programmes with the aim of enhancing Hong Kong's intellectual wealth and stimulating its economy. We invite you to be part of this exciting endeavour.

Our ten faculties offer high-quality MPhil and PhD research postgraduate programmes in numerous advanced research areas and more than 110 full-time and part-time taught postgraduate programmes. These programmes cover a wide variety of specializations, ranging from medicine and dentistry to genomics and molecular biology; from law to education, arts and the social sciences; from business administration and economics to town planning and engineering; and from environmental conservation to material science.

The emphasis of the University's Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research postgraduate programmes is on the production of a high quality thesis, though a coursework element is usually included to orient students to research methods and assist in thesis-writing. The taught postgraduate programmes lead either to a doctoral, or a master's degree or a diploma/certificate. The emphasis is on coursework, though some courses also require the submission of a dissertation.
