| Notes: |
- There are two curricula: a normal
curriculum extending over two years of
eight terms and an accelerated curriculum
extending over one year of four terms.
- Neither the normal nor the accelerated
curriculum will begin in any year when
there are insufficient numbers of
applicants.

CL 1 To be eligible for the award of the
Certificate in Chinese Language (CertChinLang) a
candidate shall
(a)
|
comply with the General
Regulations; |
(b)
|
satisfy the minimum University
Entrance Requirements or be exempted therefrom by
the Board of the Faculty of Arts; and |
(c)
|
complete the normal or the
accelerated curriculum in Putonghua (Mandarin) or
Cantonese and satisfy the examiners at the First
and Certificate Examinations in accordance with
the regulations. |
CL 2
(a)
|
The normal curriculum for
the Certificate in Chinese Language shall extend
over two years comprising four terms in each year
and shall include the First Examination held at
the end of the first year of the curriculum and
the Certificate Examination held at the end of
the curriculum in early September. |
(b)
|
The accelerated
curriculum shall extend over one year comprising
four terms. In order to gain admission to the
accelerated curriculum a candidate shall satisfy
the Department of Chinese that he already
possesses an advanced knowledge of at least one
thousand Chinese characters, or that he has
already received elementary instruction in
Putonghua (Mandarin) or Cantonese as a foreign
language up to a standard approaching that
attained at the end of the First Year of the
curriculum. The First Examination for the
accelerated curriculum shall be held at the end
of the second term and the Certificate
examination at the end of the curriculum in early
September. |
CL 3
(a)
|
The normal curriculum for the Certificate in
Chinese Language shall consist of the following:
| First Year: |
Chinese language structure and usage;
reading and character study; listening;
pronunciation; translation; oral
practice; guided composition. |
| Second Year: |
Chinese language structure and usage;
oral translation and consecutive
interpretation; written translation;
communicative use of Chinese; oral
discussion on prepared topics; reading
and character study; listening;
pronunciation and oral reading;
composition (two terms only); written
project (terms 3 and 4); newspaper
readings (Putonghua only); modern
literary readings; specialist texts
(Putonghua only); non-literary and
specialist texts (Cantonese only). |

(b)
|
The accelerated curriculum for the
Certificate in Chinese Language shall consist of
the following:
| Term 1: |
Chinese language structure and usage;
spoken Chinese; reading and character
study; listening; pronunciation;
translation; guided composition. |
| Term 2: |
Chinese language structure and usage;
communicative use of Chinese; written
translation; oral translation and
consecutive interpretation; listening,
composition; pronunciation and oral
reading; newspaper readings; modern
literary readings; specialist texts; oral
discussion on prepared texts. |
| Terms 3 and 4: |
Chinese language structure and usage;
oral translation and consecutive
interpretation; written translation;
communicative use of Chinese; oral
discussion on prepared topics; reading
and character study; listening;
pronunciation and oral reading;
composition; written project; newspaper
readings (Putonghua only); modern
literary readings; specialist texts
(Putonghua only); non-literary and
specialist texts (Cantonese only). |

CL 4
(a)
|
Both the First and the Certificate
Examinations shall consist of written papers,
oral tests and coursework. |
(b)
|
The First Examination shall include:
| (i) |
written papers in Chinese language
structure; vocabulary and characters;
translation from English to Chinese;
guided composition; reading comprehension
(questions to be answered in either
Chinese or English); |
| (ii) |
oral tests in listening
comprehension; oral reading and
pronunciation; dictation; conversation;
and |
| (iii) |
coursework assessment in progress
tests; written and other assignments;
individual tutor's coursework mark. |

(c)
|
The Final Examination shall include:
| (i) |
written papers in Chinese language
structure; vocabulary and characters;
reading comprehension; composition;
modern literary texts; and either
translation (English to Chinese and
Chinese to English) or specialist
texts and a written summary in Chinese; |
| (ii) |
oral tests in viva voce; discussion
of a prepared topic; listening
comprehension; and either
consecutive interpretation or
extempore speaking in Chinese; and |
| (iii) |
coursework assessment in a written
project; progress tests; written and
other assignments. |

CL 5 A candidate who is unable because of
illness to be present for any written paper or papers or
for any oral test or tests in the First Examination may
apply for permission to present himself at a
supplementary examination in the paper or papers or oral
test or tests to be held before the beginning of the
following academic year in the case of a candidate
following the normal curriculum or before the beginning
of the third term in the case of a candidate following
the accelerated curriculum. Any such application shall be
made on the form prescribed within one week of the first
day of the candidate's absence from any examination.
CL 6
(a)

A candidate on the
normal curriculum who has failed to satisfy the
examiners in one or more papers or tests of
either the First or the Certificate Examinations
shall be permitted to present himself at a
re-examination in each of the papers or tests
which he has failed in the following October. A
candidate who has failed to satisfy the examiners
in one or more papers or tests at the
re-examination shall be required to repeat the
courses of his failure, and to present himself
for examination again in the paper(s) or test(s)
in the following September, but if he then fails
again in one or more papers or tests, he shall
not be permitted to present himself again except
in very exceptional circumstances with the
specific permission of the Senate. |
(b)

(i) |
A candidate on the accelerated
curriculum who has failed to satisfy the
examiners in one or more papers of the First
Examination shall be permitted to present himself
in each of the papers or tests in which he has
failed to be held in April immediately following
the First Examination. |

(ii) |
A candidate on the accelerated
curriculum who has failed to satisfy the
examiners in one or more papers of the
Certificate Examination shall be permitted to
present himself at a re-examination in each of
the papers or tests in which he has failed to be
held in the following October. |
| |
(iii) |
A candidate on the accelerated
curriculum who has failed to satisfy the
examiners in one or more papers or tests at the
re-examination shall be required to repeat the
courses of his failure, and to present himself
for examination again in the paper(s) or test(s)
in the following September, but if he then fails
again in one or more papers or tests, he shall
not be permitted to present himself again except
in very exceptional circumstances with the
specific permission of the Senate. |
