- There are two curricula, full-time over
one year or part-time over two years.
- In any year in which there is an
insufficient number of applicants for
either the full-time or part-time
curriculum the course will not be offered
on that basis. The part-time course will,
in any event, be available only
biennially if numbers permit.

CL 7 To be eligible for the award of the
Diploma in Chinese Language (DipChinLang) a candidate
shall
(a)
|
comply with the General
Regulations; |
(b)
|
satisfy the minimum entrance
requirements for admission to the curriculum,
that is, have completed successfully a prescribed
two years' full-time course (or its equivalent)
in Putonghua (Mandarin) or Cantonese at the
Department of Chinese of the University of Hong
Kong and have passed the Certificate Examination,
or be exempted therefrom by the Senate; and |
(c)
|
complete the curriculum and
satisfy the examiners at the Intermediate and the
Final Examinations in accordance with the
regulations that follow. |
CL 8 The curriculum for the Diploma in Chinese
Language shall
(a)
|
extend either over one
year comprising four terms after satisfactory
completion of the curriculum for the Certificate
in Chinese Language, or on a part-time
basis over two years comprising eight terms after
satisfactory completion of the curriculum for the
Certificate in Chinese Language; |
(b)
|
comprise instruction by
classwork and individual tuition, including
practical work; and |
(c)
|
include the Intermediate
Examination and the Final Examination held at the
end of the second and fourth terms respectively
if the course is taken full-time or at the end of
the fourth and eighth terms respectively if the
course is taken part-time. |
CL 9 The Intermediate Examination shall consist
of two written papers, as follows:
(a)
|
Translation of Chinese texts,
modern and classical, into English, and |
(b)
|
Composition (translation from
English into Chinese and essay writing); |
together with an oral test which shall include general
conversation, reading and extempore translation.
The Final Examination shall consist of four written
papers and an oral examination each in the following
subjects:
- Written papers
- Background and critical questions on set
books
- Translation
- Composition
- Grammar
- Oral examination
- Conversation
- Extempore translation
- Reading.
CL 10 The Intermediate Examination is
compulsory, but a candidate who fails to satisfy the
examiners in one or more papers or the oral test of the
examination may proceed to the second part of the
curriculum without re-examination.
CL 11 A candidate who has failed to satisfy the
examiners in one or more papers or the oral tests of the
Final Examination shall be permitted to present himself
at the Supplementary Examination held annually at the
beginning of October in each of the papers or oral tests
in which he has failed. A candidate who has failed to
satisfy the examiners in one or more papers or oral tests
at the Supplementary Examination shall be required to
repeat the course in the subsequent years and to present
himself for re -examination at the end of the course, but
if he then fails again in one or more papers or oral
tests, he shall not be permitted to present himself again
except in very exceptional circumstances with the
specific permission of the Senate.
