Admission requirements

D 29 To be eligible for admission to the curriculum for the Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Surgery a candidate shall

(a)

comply with the General Regulations;

(b)

hold the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery of this University, or a degree or other qualification of equivalent standard from another university or comparable institution accepted for this purpose; and

(c)

satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination if required.

Qualifying examination

D 30

(a)

A qualifying examination may be set to test a candidate's formal academic ability or his ability to complete the prescribed courses of study and practice. It shall consist of one or more written papers or the equivalent and may include a project report, a practical examination and oral examinations.

(b)

A candidate who is required to satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination shall not be permitted to register until he has satisfied the examiners in the examination.

Award of diploma

D 31 To be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Surgery a candidate shall

(a)

comply with the General Regulations; and

(b)

complete the curriculum and satisfy the examiners in accordance with the regulations set out below.

Curriculum

D 32 The curriculum shall comprise an approved programme of study and practice in a field related to the practice of dentistry as prescribed in the syllabuses. It shall consist of a minimum of 600 hours of prescribed work normally extending over one academic year of full-time study or two academic years of part-time study. The curriculum shall include all examinations.

D 33 To complete the curriculum a candidate shall

(a)

follow instruction in the courses prescribed and complete satisfactorily all coursework requirements; and

(b)

satisfy the examiners in all examinations as may be required.

Examinations

D 34 Examinations may take the form of written papers, oral, practical and clinical examinations, assessments of coursework, or a combination of these methods.

D 35 A candidate who has failed to satisfy the examiners in any part of the examinations may be permitted to present himself again for examination at a time to be determined by the Board of Examiners; or he may be recommended for discontinuation of studies under the provisions of General Regulation G 12.


Examination results

D 36 At the conclusion of the examinations, the names of the successful candidates shall be published in alphabetical order.


SYLLABUSES FOR THE POSTGRADUATE
DIPLOMA IN DENTAL SURGERY


51700. Children's dentistry

An advanced course of academic, laboratory and clinical work covering the total patient care concept for the child patient from birth to adolescence. The course addresses the growth and development of the normal, medically compromised and physically disabled child and emphasizes the use of preventive philosophies and concepts in the management of the child patient including treatment planning, restorative care, diagnosis and management of dento-facial anomalies. It includes written and study assignments, laboratory work and supervised clinical work in the Prince Philip Dental Hospital, as well as the management of patients in affiliated hospitals utilizing hospital dental facilities.


52700. Conservative dentistry

A course of advanced study in an aspect of conservative dentistry (operative, fixed prosthodontics, endodontics) consisting of lectures, tutorials, written work and supervised clinical practice.

The course is designed to extend the student's knowledge and practical expertise in the chosen subject in relation to technology, materials science and acquired clinical skills.


57700. Dental public health

A course of study into the theory and practice of preventive dentistry, related behavioural sciences, systems for the provision of dental health care and their administration. The course will include lectures, tutorials, clinical and laboratory work together with project assignments.


59701. Oral radiology

A course of advanced study into oral radiography and radiology consisting lectures, tutorials, assignments and supervised clinical work. The course is designed to provide the students with advanced radiological interpretation and radiographic practice including basic knowledge of general radiology in relation to dentistry.


59700. Oral surgery

A course of advanced study and supervised clinical work in oral surgery which is designed to provide candidates with a detailed knowledge of the principles and practice of dento-alveolar surgery. The course will include seminars in radiological interpretation and demonstrations of intravenous sedation technique and more advanced surgery as applicable.


57701. Periodontology

A course of study designed to allow general practitioners to extend their knowledge of periodontal diseases and their clinical skills in periodontal diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment and supportive care delivery. The course will include lectures, tutorials, seminars, case conferences, clinical and laboratory work.


57702. Periodontology and dental public health

A combined course of study whose syllabus will comprise, or be based upon elements drawn from the separate programmes in Periodontology and Dental Public Health (see the syllabus entries for those programmes). The course will include lectures, tutorials, clinical and laboratory work together with project assignments.


58700. Prosthetic dentistry

A course of study in prosthetic dentistry relevant to general dental practice consisting of lectures, tutorials, clinical and para-clinical assignments and written work. This course is designed to provide the student with a more detailed knowledge of the principles and practice of prosthetic dentistry, including study of the materials and technology commonly employed.
