The Advanced Diploma in Paediatric Dentistry is a postgraduate award following the satisfactory completion of a prescribed course of advanced study related to paedodontics.


Admission requirements

D 57 To be eligible for admission to the course for the Advanced Diploma in Paediatric Dentistry candidate shall

(a)

comply with the General Regulations;

(b)

hold the degree of Master of Dental Surgery, in the field of paedodontics, of this University, or a degree or other qualification of equivalent standard from another University or comparable institution accepted for this purpose; and

(c)

satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination if deemed necessary.


Qualifying examination

D 58

(a)

A qualifying examination may be set to test a candidate's formal academic ability or his ability to complete the prescribed courses of study and clinical practice. It shall consist of one or more written papers, a practical examination and oral examination.

(b)

A candidate who is required to satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination shall not be permitted to register until he or she has satisfied the examiners in the examination.


Award of diploma

D 59 To be eligible for the award of the Advanced Diploma in Paediatric Dentistry a candidate shall

(a)

comply with the General Regulations; and

(b)

complete the curriculum and satisfy the examiners in accordance with the regulations set out below.


Curriculum

D 60 The curriculum shall comprise an approved programme of study and practice in a field related to the practice of paedodontics as prescribed in the syllabus. It shall extend over not less than twelve months of full-time study or twenty-four months of part-time study and shall include examinations and the submission of a research or clinical paper.


D 61 To complete the curriculum a candidate shall

(a)

follow instruction in the courses prescribed and complete satisfactorily all coursework requirements;

(b)

satisfy the examiners in all examinations as may be required; and

(c)

complete and submit a research or clinical paper which satisfies the examiners.


Research or clinical paper

D 62 The research or clinical paper shall be prepared for publication in an international dental journal in the final part of the year of study; the candidate shall submit a statement that the paper represents his own work (mainly) undertaken after registration as a candidate for the award. The examiners may prescribe an oral examination on the subject of the paper.


Examinations

D 63 Examinations take the form of a written paper, oral, practical and clinical examinations.


D 64 A candidate who has failed to satisfy the examiners in any part of the examinations may be permitted to present himself again for examination at a time to be determined by the Board of Examiners; or he may be recommended for discontinuation of studies under the provisions of General Regulation G12.


D 65 A candidate who has presented a research or clinical paper which has failed to satisfy the examiners may be permitted to revise and re-present the research clinical paper within a period to be determined by the Board of Examiners; or he may be recommended for discontinuation of studies under the provisions of General Regulation G12.


Examination results

D 66 At the conclusion of the examinations, the names of the successful candidates shall be published in alphabetical order.


SYLLABUS FOR THE
ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN PAEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

PREAMBLE

1.

The objectives of the Advanced Diploma in Paediatric Dentistry are to enable candidates to achieve an advanced level of knowledge and competence in the field of paedodontics by means of

(a)

a prescribed course of study having a minimum of 300 hours of coursework (i.e., lectures and seminars and related written and practical work); and

(b)

additionally, a supervised clinical research project or case study and the submission of a paper.

The prescribed course of study will include subjects to be taken by all candidates, in accordance with the syllabus specified by the Programme Director. The supervised clinical research project will be related to each candidate's prescribed course of study.

2.

Candidates must attend the practice of the Prince Philip Dental Hospital for at least four sessions a week as defined by the Department of Children's Dentistry and Orthodontics.

3.

The methods and pattern of assessment and examination of each candidate will be determined by the Programme Director.


DENT6011 Advanced Diploma in Paediatric Dentistry

Syllabus

A course of advanced study involving seminars, lectures, tutorials, treatment planning, case discussions and supervised clinical practice related to the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases and trauma in children. The course of study will involve

(a)

out-patient clinical practice involving the management of a wide range of dental conditions in children with an emphasis on the care of cleft lip and palate and special needs patients.

(b)

The management of medically compromised patients will be taught primarily in an in-patient environment where some will be treated under general anaesthesia and some on the hospital ward. Simultaneously aspects of paediatrics will be learned, as will the need for liaison with other health workers.
