Any publication based on work approved for a higher degree should contain
a reference to the effect that the work was submitted to the University of Hong Kong for
the award of the degree.
Regulations for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD)
M 27 Definition
The degree of Doctor of Medicine is a postgraduate degree, awarded for original
observations that make a definite contribution to medical knowledge, presented in the form
of a thesis deserving of publication.
M 28 Admission requirements
A candidate for registration for the degree of MD
(a) shall comply with the General Regulations;
(b) shall be
| (i) |
a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of this University whose
degrees have been conferred not less than three years before the date of application for
registration; or |
| (ii) |
the holder of equivalent qualifications from another university or
comparable institution accepted for this purpose who is a full-time teacher or equivalent
appointee of at least five years' standing in one of the departments of the Faculty of
Medicine of this University; and |
(c) shall submit satisfactory evidence of his postgraduate training and
appropriate experience in the field of study proposed.
M 29 Registration
A candidate shall be permitted to register only on the first day of any month of the
year, and shall be required to submit his thesis not later than at the end of five
calendar years from his date of first registration.
M 30 Title of thesis
Before presenting his thesis, a candidate shall submit the title of the thesis for
approval; no modification of the title shall be made thereafter without further approval.
M 31 Submission of thesis
(a) The thesis may consist of a single paper or of a series of papers on the same
subject published or unpublished provided that it shall be presented in the form of a
thesis and shall be written in English. A mere compilation is not acceptable as a thesis.
(b) A candidate shall present four copies of the thesis for examination, typed or
printed and bound in accordance with the regulations governing the format, binding, and
presentation of theses, together with a written declaration that it represents his own
work and that it has not been submitted to any other institution in application for
admission to a degree, diploma, or other qualification. If the thesis contains
contributions that are not the candidate's own work, the extent of such contributions
shall be declared.
M 32 Examinations
The thesis shall be examined by examiners appointed for this purpose, one of whom shall
be the Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine of the University. The candidate
may be required by the examiners to attend an examination on the thesis.
M 33 Examination results
(a) A candidate who has satisfied the examiners shall be recommended for conferment of
the degree of Doctor of Medicine.
(b) A candidate who has not satisfied the examiners
| (i) |
may be required to resubmit his thesis after the correction of minor
grammatical and /or typographical errors or after minor revisions as required by the
examiners, without a new examination; or |
| (ii) |
may be required to revise and resubmit his thesis for a new examination
within a period specified by the examiners, this period not to exceed one calendar year;
or |
| (iii) |
may be deemed to have failed and shall not be permitted to submit his
thesis again for re-examination. |
M 34 Any publication based on work approved for the degree of Doctor of Medicine
shall contain a reference to the effect that the work was submitted to the University of
Hong Kong for the award of the degree of Doctor of Medicine.
Regulations for the Degree of Master of Surgery (MS)
M 35 Definition
The degree of Master of Surgery is a postgraduate degree, awarded for original
observations that make a definite contribution to medical knowledge within the general
field of surgery, presented in the form of a thesis deserving of publication.
M 36 Admission requirements
A candidate for registration for the degree of MS
(a) shall comply with the General Regulations;
(b) shall be
| (i) |
a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of this University whose
degrees have been conferred not less than five years before the date of application for
registration; or |
| (ii) |
the holder of equivalent qualifications from another university or
comparable institution accepted for this purpose who is a full-time teacher or equivalent
appointee of this University of at least five years' standing, in the field of general
surgery, orthopaedic surgery, or any other surgical specialty; and |
(c) shall submit satisfactory evidence of his postgraduate training and
appropriate experience in the field of study proposed.
M 37 Registration
A candidate shall be permitted to register only on the first day of any month of the
year, and shall be required to submit his thesis not later than at the end of five
calendar years from his date of first registration.
M 38 Title of thesis
Before presenting his thesis, a candidate shall submit the title of the thesis for

Regulations for the Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD)
LL 10 The degree of Doctor of Laws shall be open to any person who (a) is a
graduate of not less than five years's standing of the University of Hong Kong or (b) has
held for a period or periods totalling at least five years the post of Lecturer, Senior
Lecturer, Reader, or Professor in the University of Hong Hong provided that he is a
graduate of not less than five years' standing of a university approved by the Senate.
LL 11 A candidate for the degree shall produce evidence, from published work,
that he has made original contribution to knowledge of such a high order as to entitle him
to an authoritative standing in his branch of learning.
LL 12 Each application shall be accompanied by a list of published work on which
the candidature is based, together with four sets of these works and a statement (of not
more than 1,000 words) signed by the candidate setting out the basis of his case for the
award of the degree. The candidate shall also submit a written declaration that the work
has been done by himself and, in the case of work done in collaboration with others,
specifying clearly his own contribution in each case. He shall indicate what part, if any,
of the work has been submitted for another degree in this or any other university by
himself.
Regulations for the Degree of Doctor of Letters (DL
itt)
A 24 The degree of Doctor of Letters shall be open to any person who (a) is a
graduate of not less than five years' standing of the University of Hong Kong or (b) has
held for a period or periods totalling at least five years the post of Lecturer, Senior
Lecturer, Reader, or Professor in the University of Hong Kong provided that he is a
graduate of not less than five years' standing of a university approved by the Senate.
A 25 A candidate for the degree shall produce evidence, from published work,
that he has made original contribution to knowledge of such a high order as to entitle him
to an authoritative standing in his branch of learning.

SS 26 The degree of Doctor of Social Sciences shall be open to any person who

(b) has held for a period or periods totalling at least five years the post of Lecturer,
Senior Lecturer, Reader, or Professor in the University of Hong Kong provided that he is a
graduate of not less than five years' standing of a university approved by the Senate.
