Any publication based on work approved for a higher degree should contain a reference to the effect that the work was submitted to the University of Hong Kong for the award of the degree.

The degree of Master of Urban Design is a postgraduate degree awarded on the satisfactory completion of a course of study in the Faculty of Architecture. The major part of the curriculum shall be formed from modules offered in one of the following fields: urban design; real estate development.


Admission requirements

Ar 43 To be eligible for admission to the courses leading to the degree of Master of Urban Design a candidate

(a)

shall comply with the General Regulations;

(b)

shall hold
(i) a Bachelor's degree of this University in a relevant subject; or
(ii) another relevant qualification of equivalent standard from this University or from another university or comparable institution accepted for this purpose; and

(c)

shall satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination if required.

Qualifying examination

(a)

A qualifying examination may be set to test the candidate's formal academic ability or his ability to follow the courses of study prescribed. It shall consist of one or more written papers or their equivalent and may include a project report.

(b)

A candidate who is required to satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination shall not be permitted to register until he has satisfied the examiners in the examination.

Award of degree

Ar 45 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Master of Urban Design a candidate

(a)

shall comply with the General Regulations; and

(b)

shall complete the curriculum and satisfy the examiners in accordance with the regulations set out below.

Curriculum

Ar 46

(a)

The curriculum shall extend over not less than two academic years of full-time study or three academic years of part-time study and not more than four academic years in all cases, with a minimum of 400 hours of prescribed work, and shall include all examinations, urban design project reports, and a dissertation as detailed below.

(b)

To complete the curriculum a candidate
(i) shall follow courses of instruction and complete satisfactorily all prescribed written work and practical work where appropriate;
(ii) shall normally satisfy the examiners in not less than twelve modules including eight core modules:
  • Urban design I
  • Urban planning: theory and practice
  • Physical environment and site planning
  • Urban analysis and models
  • Planning law and practice
  • Urban development and the real estate industry
  • CAD in urban design
  • Design of cities

and the balance from a list of Specialization Modules selected from the modular programmes and any other courses of study in the University approved from time to time. Candidates may be required to study courses such as Economics for professionals or Introduction to computers in urban design in order to strengthen their academic background and as programme prerequisites depending on their field of specialization and the modules selected; such courses will not count towards the minimum of twelve modules required; a list of Specialization Modules is given below. The list may vary from year to year.

  • Seminars in urban design and development
  • Urban design II
  • Market analysis in urban design
  • Development management in urban design
  • Aspects of property development
  • Topics in architectural design
  • History and theory of landscape architecture
  • Real estate investment
  • Law and the real estate industry
  • Planning theories
  • Introduction to sectoral planning
  • Urban transportation systems

Selection of Specialization Modules shall be made in consultation with the programme coordinators concerned to secure specialization in either urban design or real estate development and be subject to the approval of the Committee for Postgraduate Modular Programmes.
Student may upon an application be granted credit for up to two modules on the basis of their previous studies subject to the approval of the Higher Architecture Degrees Committee;

(iii) shall complete work prescribed in the Urban design studio I (6 modules) and Urban design studio II including a dissertation (6 modules); and
(iv) shall satisfy the examiners in each of the modules followed either by a written paper or an assessment of coursework, or a combination of these methods. The examiners may at their discretion prescribe an oral examination in any module or on any work prescribed in the Urban design studio.

Examinations

(a)

A candidate who has failed to satisfy the examiners at a first attempt in not more than half the number of modules followed during an academic year may be permitted to present himself for re-examination in the failed modules at a specified date.
If he again fails, but in not more than two modules, he may be permitted to repeat the relevant curriculum and to present himself for re-examination at a specified date in the failed module(s) at a third and last attempt.
A candidate who has failed to satisfy the examiners in one or more electives in his first or second attempt may be permitted under special circumstances to register for alternative modules and be examined at a specified date. If he fails to satisfy the examiners, in any of the substitute modules, he may be permitted to present himself for re-examination only once more at specified date. If any of the failed modules is not being offered in the particular academic year, this may be construed as a special circumstance for the purpose of this article.

(b)

A candidate who has failed to satisfy the examiners in any academic year in work prescribed in the Urban design studio may be permitted to present himself for re-examination at a specified date. If he again fails to satisfy the examiners in any work, he shall be required to repeat all or part of the work prescribed during the academic year and to present himself for re-examination at a specified date in the work repeated.

(c)

A candidate shall be recommended for discontinuation under the following circumstances:
(i) if he fails to satisfy the examiners at a first attempt in more than half the number of modules followed during an academic year;
(ii) if he fails to satisfy the examiners in any of the failed modules in his third attempt;
(iii) if he fails to satisfy the examiners in his third attempt in any of the work prescribed in the Urban design studio.
(iv) if he fails to satisfy all requirements for the award of the degree within four academic years from commencement of studies.

Examination results

Ar 48 After presentation of the dissertation and after conclusion of the examinations, a pass list shall be published in alphabetical order. A candidate who has shown exceptional merit in the whole examination may be awarded a mark of distinction, and this mark shall be recorded on the candidate's degree diploma.
