The Postgraduate Diploma in General Dental Surgery is a postgraduate award following the satisfactory completion of a prescribed course of further study related to fixed and removable prosthodontics, operative dentistry, endodontics and periodontology.


Admission requirements

D 67 To be eligible for admission to the course for the Postgraduate Diploma in General Dental Surgery, the candidate must:

(a)

comply with the General Regulations;

(b)

hold the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery of this University, or a degree or other qualification of equivalent standard from another university or comparable institution accepted for this purpose; and

(c)

satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination if deemed necessary.


Qualifying examination

D 68

(a)

A qualifying examination may be set to test a candidate's formal academic ability or his ability to complete the prescribed courses of study and clinical practice. It shall consist of one or more written papers, a practical examination and oral examinations.

(b)

A candidate who is required to satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination shall not be permitted to register until he has satisfied the examiners in the examination.


Award of diploma

D 69 To be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in General Dental Surgery a candidate shall

(a)

comply with the General Regulations; and

(b)

complete the curriculum and satisfy the examiners in accordance with the regulations set out below.


Curriculum

D 70 The curriculum shall comprise an approved programme of study and practice related to the practice of dentistry as prescribed in the syllabus. It shall consist of a minimum of 600 hours of prescribed work extending over two academic years of part-time study. The curriculum shall include all examinations.


D 71 To complete the curriculum a candidate shall

(a)

follow instruction in the courses prescribed and complete satisfactorily all coursework requirements; and

(b)

satisfy the examiners in all examinations as may be required.


Examinations

D 72 Examinations take the form of written papers, oral, practical and clinical examinations, assessment of coursework, or a combination of these methods.


D 73 A candidate who has failed to satisfy the examiners in any part of the examinations may be permitted to present himself again for examination at a time to be determined by the Board of Examiners; or he may be recommended for discontinuation of studies under the provisions of General Regulation G 12.


Examination results

D 74 At the conclusion of the examinations, the names of the successful candidates shall be published in alphabetical order.


SYLLABUSES FOR THE POSTGRADUATE
DIPLOMA IN GENERAL DENTAL SURGERY


A course of study designed to allow general practitioners to extend their knowledge and practice in the areas of fixed and removable prosthodontics, operative dentistry, endodontics, periodontology and other topics relevant to general dental practice. The course will include seminars, case conferences, clinical and laboratory work and is designed to provide the student with detailed knowledge of the principles and experience in the practice of the above areas including the study of materials and technologies commonly employed.

The objectives of the course are as follows - that the graduate will:

i

be capable of assessing a patient's general and dental health, having a knowledge of the relevant disease processes; and be able to formulate a comprehensive restorative treatment plan including preventive care for adult patients with compromised dentitions.

ii

have undertaken, competently, the clinical procedures of fixed and removable prosthodontics, operative dentistry including the use of new restorative materials, non-surgical and surgical endodontic therapy, non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy; and have knowledge and understanding of the relevant dental materials and technologies.

iii

have a sound knowledge of the scientific basis for various treatment options and be able to integrate theoretical and practical knowledge in respect of the management of adult patients with compromised dentitions.

The prescribed course of study will include three-to-four sessions a week of coursework (i.e., lectures, seminars and related written and practical work) extending over two academic years. During the study, the candidates are required to attend practical sessions in the following areas: Oral Rehabilitation, Conservative Dentistry (including endodontics) and Periodontology plus seminars related to general dental practice including Infection Control, Implantology, Minor Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Paedodontics, Practice Management and Radiology, etc.
