REGULATIONS FOR THE POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION (PCEd) 1 (See also General Regulations)

Ed 203. The curriculum shall normally extend over two semesters spreading over one academic year of full-time study or four semesters spreading over two academic years of part-time study and shall include an examination of Practical Teaching prescribed in Ed 204(d) and the written and/or other presentations required for assignments in each of the courses prescribed in Ed 204(c). The examiners shall take into account assessment of the candidates' performance in completing all the requirements of the curriculum including participation in field, laboratory or practical work, as the case may be. Ed 206. Candidates who have failed to satisfy the examiners in not more than two of the courses prescribed in Ed 204(c), but have satisfied the examiners in Ed 204(d) Practical Teaching, may present themselves for re-examination in each of the courses in which they have failed by not later than the following September 1. Ed 207. Candidates who have failed to satisfy the examiners in the Practical Teaching, but have satisfied the examiners in all the courses prescribed in Ed 204(c), may present themselves for re-examination in Practical Teaching within one academic year of their first attempt. Ed 208. Candidates who have failed to satisfy the examiners in one of the courses prescribed in Ed 204(c) and in Ed 204(d) Practical Teaching may present themselves for re-examination by the respective deadlines as set out in regulations Ed 206 and 207. Ed 209. Candidates who have failed to complete all written, practical or other tasks as prescribed in Ed 204(a) and 204(b) shall be required to complete all such work, or to carry out such supplementary tasks as may be prescribed by the examiners, prior to the beginning of the following academic year. Candidates who have shown exceptional merit may be awarded a mark of distinction which shall be recorded in the candidates' certificates. SYLLABUSES FOR THE POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION 2
This course examines the methods of teaching of a subject or subjects of a cognate area within the school curriculum. It focuses on work in Hong Kong schools, and concerns issues such as the place, value and problems of the area within the curriculum; the planning, design and evaluation of lessons, programmes and syllabuses to achieve interest and learning; organization and control in classrooms, laboratories and other teaching settings; new developments in teaching in Hong Kong and overseas; the use of information and communications technology in teaching and learning; methods of assessment; production of resources and evaluation of textbooks and other materials.
This course considers the methods and practices of teachers' professional duties irrespective of specialist responsibilities in the curriculum. It aims to develop some of the common classroom skills necessary for organizing and conducting classes. This course is concerned with the nature of effective teaching, the curriculum, the planning of lessons and schemes of work, the organization of classes.
This course introduces concepts in the foundations of education such as sociology, psychology and philosophy focusing on the relationship between theory and practice. Topics covered include Psychology of Classroom Learning, the School Curriculum and Language in Education, Schooling and Society, and Meeting Individual Needs.
Candidates will be required to select two elective courses from two broad areas: A - Educational Studies Options and B-Minor Methods. The Educational Studies Options contain courses which are designed to extend and broaden the candidates' understanding within Educational Studies, whilst courses in the Minor Methods aim to develop their abilities to teach a school subject other than the ones they have chosen as their Major Methods.
The lists of courses offered will be determined yearly.
This is offered as a separate course in the full-time programme but is integrated within the Major Methods Course in the part-time programme. The purpose of this course is to develop the candidates' classroom teaching skills in specific areas.
This course aims to equip candidates with the practical knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for teaching in a school setting.
