The Language Centre is a service as well as a teaching unit in the Faculty of Arts. It offers a variety of language courses including French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish. The Language Centre is equipped with laboratories for language teaching and practice, as well as Language Resource Centres for self-access learning.

The Practice Laboratory is located in Room 615, K.K. Leung Building, and the two Language Resource Centres are in Room 229, Old Library Building and Room 402, Meng Wah Complex. These facilities are open to all members of the University.

COURSES OFFERED

FRENCH AND GERMAN

The Language Centre offers both degree and certificate level courses in French and German. The degree courses are offered to students in the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the School of Business. The certificate courses are open to all students of the University.

ITALIAN

The Language Centre began offering non-degree courses in Italian in 1980. At present, there are beginners' and intermediate level courses open to all students.

SPANISH

The Language Centre started its non-degree Spanish programme in 1993-94 and now offers beginners', intermediate and advanced courses open to all students.

SWEDISH

The Language Centre began teaching Swedish in 1994-95 and will continue to offer courses in Swedish for beginners in 1997-98.

APPLICATIONS AND FURTHER INFORMATION

The application period for degree courses in French and German follows the time-table of the faculties and school in which the respective courses form a part. Application for all certificate and non-degree courses can be made in August/September each year. Additional information can be obtained from course handbooks obtainable from the General Office of the Language Centre located on the seventh floor of the K.K. Leung Building.
