Guidelines for Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments, Centres, Units (SARS Prevention Guideline: Aug 10, 2004)

Recommendation for Actions Within Departments, Schools, Units and Centres

Encourage all members to observe good personal hygiene.

Without SARS Reported
  1. Cleansing
    Cleanse and disinfect all office furniture and rooms regularly, using diluted household bleach (i.e. adding 1 part of household bleach to 99 parts of water), rinse with water and then mop dry. Cleansing includes door handles, door surfaces touched by hands, lift and lift buttons.
     
    Ensure toilet facilities are properly maintained. If cleaning vomitus, use 1:49 diluted household bleach solution. Rinse the area with water and wipe dry.

  3. Ventilation
    Maintain good indoor ventilation. Open windows, if possible. Avoid Smoking and passive smoking.
     
  4. Information Concerning Prevention
    Please refer to Information on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
     
With SARS Reported
  1. Cleansing
    Cleanse and disinfect at least once a day as above.
    Please refer to Recommendation on Cleaning/Disinfection (SARS Reported Locally period).
     
  2. Notification of Suspected Case:
    If a member of staff or student is a suspected case of SARS, he or she should inform the Department Head and the Director of University Health Service at 2859-2507 or fax 2548-1430. The University will confirm such information with the hospital and the Department of Health. Advice on subsequent actions will be given accordingly. Please refer to Action Plan if there is a 'Case' in a Hall of Residence or in the University.
     
  3. Contacts of a Suspected SARS Case:
    If a member of staff or student has been a close contact of a known SARS case, he or she should not go to work or lectures. Inform the Director of University Health Service at 2859-2507 during office hours and the Department Head. Consult the doctor immediately if symptom of fever develops.
     
  4. To complement the above recommendation, the Estates Office and the Classroom Services (Registry) has tightened up the following:
    • Disinfect and clean all common areas, inclusive of corridors, lobbies, toilets, central classrooms, shuttle buses, lifts, handrails, etc. (Estates Office);
    • Disinfect and clean air filters in air-conditioning and ventilation systems, plus replacement of disposable filters where applicable (Estates Office);
    • Provision of adequate fresh air ventilation to all central systems (Estates Office); and
    • Sterilize microphones in centrally time table classrooms (Classroom Services, Registry)
