We sometimes ask ourselves:
* What do I say after we have exchanged our names?

* When should I shake hands? Do I shake hands correctly?

* How do I introduce people to each other?

* Should I eat with just my fork?

* How should I deal with the bone(s) in my mouth?

* How should I eat: a whole fish, prawns in shells, bits like peas and what I dislike?

* Can I eat with my hands?

* How should I hold my wine glass?

* How much wine is too much?

* What if I don't drink alcohol?

Outcomes:

  • All the answers to the questions above and more will be discussed
  • Practise making small talk and western dining etiquette at lunchtime
  • Use the etiquette guidelines as a tool for communication
  • Build social confidence so that you will enjoy social interaction

The Secret of Social Success (Cocktail Party Etiquette)
Course Code: SS1/06-07

Have you ever walked into a room full of strangers? Or tried introducing yourself to a group where everybody knows everybody else--except you? If not, you will soon face these occasions, and they can be stressful. This workshop will focus upon building social success at a Cocktail Party. Cocktail parties are an important part of the social network. They demand a knowledge of how to drink wisely and prudently but in an informed manner. They are also a place where you meet people and socially interact. This short course helps you to mix with people, to engage in social conversations and to deal with the etiquette of such occasions.

Outcomes:

  • Increased social confidence
  • Improved sense of style and good manners
  • The ability to take challenging social opportunities in you stride
  • How to enjoy social situations which may be stressful
  • How to eat, drink, talk and think at the same time

* How do I select the right frames for my spectacles?

* What should I consider when I buy my suit for job interviews?

* For job interviews:

- Should I colour my hair?

- (For female students) Should I wear any make-up?

- (For male students) What colour and pattern would be appropriate for my tie?

- What colour shirt should I wear with my suit?

* What impressions would I give others?

* What do I wear when the function is 'dressy casual'

* Should I use any cologne or perfume?

Outcomes:

  • All the answers to the questions above and more will be discussed.
  • Identify and extend individual's strengths in image and areas for improvement.
  • Acquire a clear idea of our clothing and fitting needs and what we should choose to buy
  • Build social confidence by knowing what to wear appropriately to different functions.
