Welcome to the School of Modern Languages and Cultures!
Our School was established in July 2006 as a result of the reorganization of the Faculty of Arts, bringing together under one roof the Department of Japanese Studies, our Programmes in American and European Studies, and the University’s Language Centre. The University has a long tradition of teaching foreign languages to Hong Kong students, with the first French classes introduced in the 1930s. In addition to our four interdisciplinary area studies programmes, the School now offers courses in ten foreign languages – Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Thai – and we are working on adding a further two: Modern Greek and Russian. Our programmes are taught by specialist teachers and are supported by excellent teaching facilities and learning resources.
This is the depth of experience that we bring to our public course offerings, which we have grouped, for administrative convenience, under the umbrella of the newly created Centre for the Promotion of Language Learning. We believe that it is never too late or too early to start learning a foreign language. Whether it be for professional reasons, for travel, to meet new people, pick up new skills, or just for fun, learning a foreign language never fails to broaden your horizons and open your mind to the amazing cultural diversity and opportunities found in our world today.
