INTRODUCTION

The Head of Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, Faculty of Education
Dr. Lena Wong Ph.D. (Queensland)

The Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences was established in the Faculty of Education in July 1988. It was set up by the University principally to provide locally-educated speech therapists who are Cantonese speakers and so give Hong Kong improved speech and language therapy services. (Until the first graduates completed their course in 1992, speech therapists practising in Hong Kong qualified overseas.) Although the medium of teaching is English (as throughout the University), the Division has devoted considerable efforts to developing assessment and remediation materials for Cantonese speakers.

With an annual intake of 40-plus undergraduates, the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences teaches a four year Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Speech and Hearing Sciences which affords an internationally recognized professional qualification. The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (U.K.) accredited the course in 1992 and course was reaccredited in 2006. To supplement external placement opportunities in undergraduates' speech therapy practicum, members of the Division run speech, language and audiology clinics. Students obtain substantial practical experience working with children and with adults. The Division implemented an innovative problem-based learning curriculum in the BSc programme in September 1998. Internationally, this programme is one of the first of its type for speech therapists and has been met with enthusiasm from students, faculty and outside educators and speech therapy professionals.

In September 1996, the Division instituted an MSc in Audiology, which is a two year program to produce professionals to serve the hearing-impaired population of Hong Kong. We have a state-of-the-art Audiology facility in the Division, via a generous donation from Standard Chartered Community Foundation, for clinical services and research. Research degrees of M.Phil. and Ph.D. are offered in speech, language and hearing related areas. We have approximately 20 research post graduate students in the Division.

As can be seen from the entries for individual members of staff below, the Division is engaged in a wide range of funded research projects. We are committed to collaborative research, both within and outside the Division.

The Division has nine full time supporting technical, secretarial or clerical staff and is well provided with basic and specialized equipment and excellent library resources. It is located in the Prince Philip Dental Hospital, where the Dental Faculty is housed, at a short distance from the main university campus. Accommodation includes clinical rooms, students' computer room, sound booths and workshop.
