43rd Anniversary Concert

Date: 11th February, 2011 (Fri)

Time: 8pm

Venue: Sha Tin Town hall Auditorium

It has already been four decades since the foundation of the Hong Kong University Students Union Choir. Though a new generation of students direct and conduct the choir every year, the pursuit and passion in making and spreading good choral music stands adamant as the aim of the choral group. Stepping into 2011, the Choir proudly presents their 43rd Anniversary Concert, featuring five excerpts from the classic masterpieces:

Vivaldi

Gloria in D RV.589: first movement

Bach

St John Passion BWV245: opening chorus

Handel

Messiah: Hallelujah

Mozart

Requiem in D, K626: Introit & Kyrie

Brahms

Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op.45: fourth movement

The Choir is honored to have invited Hong Kongs own Miss Vivian Yau, the 15 year-old soprano solo champion in the 2010 Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, as the guest soloist in two of the masterpieces. The five highlighted major choral works are also co-presented with the newly established Hong Kong Classical Players recruited by Mr. Sean Li, who is currently the conductor of Hong Kong Festival Orchestra, renowned for the consistence of a group of talented and young instrumentalists. The guest orchestra shall also present the Tragic Overture by Brahms giving a further touch of sadness to the next movement in Brahms Requiem.

The program of the concert not only promises a catalogue of entertainment but education especially to high school students in Hong Kong. The repertoire shall be set under the conventional musical timeline, to trace the evolution of Western music from Medieval to the Twentieth Century, and exhibit the various expressiveness and articulation of music forms. Two pieces of Chinese music are also included in the repertoire to exhibit a more global picture of the evolution of music.

With brief introductions and explanations given to the audience about each categorized musical periods, and with the diligent interpretations prepared by the Choirs two conductors who are under the tutelage of distinguished Mr. Apollo Wong, along with the dazzling soloist and notable orchestra, new lights are sure to be shed upon the listeners.
