Did you know this about Sweden?
Sweden is a long and narrow country with over half of its area consisting of forest. Its total area is 400 times Hong Kong’s, and yet the population is not more than 9 million compared to Hong Kong’s almost 7 million. The capital is Stockholm with around 1 million inhabitants, the largest lake is Lake Vänern and the highest mountain is Kebnekaise with its 2,111m (6,926 ft). The form of government is constitutional monarchy (King Carl XVI Gustaf) and parliamentary democracy. The Parliament is called Riksdag and has one chamber with 349 members. The principal exports are timber products, paper & pulp, cars & trucks, machinery, electrical and telecommunications equipment, and the main imports are oil, cars, spare parts, clothes and fruits.

The Swedish community in Hong Kong
consists of around 900 people altogether. Approximately 130 Swedish companies are established here including: Alfa Laval, Astra Zeneca, Atlas Copco, Electrolux, Ericsson, IKEA, Scania, SKF, Tetra Pak, Volvo and many more. The Consulate General of Sweden is located in the Hong Kong Club Building in Central, and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce has been present in Hong Kong since 1986. The Swedish Trade Council has an office together with the Consulate. Furthermore there is a Swedish School, a Swedish Church and a Swedish monthly magazine called “Bulletinen” for all Swedes in Hong Kong. The Swedish women’s association, SWEA, is very active and the Swedish community as a whole takes pride in celebrating the National Day (6 June), Mid Summer, the start of the Cray Fish season, Lucia etc. even such a long way from Sweden.
