 Executive Summary

UBC is delighted to develop and host the core course on Global Citizenship as part of the Global Issues Certificate project sponsored by Universitas 21. The project is a joint collaboration between the University of British Columbia, the University of Nottingham, the University of Melbourne, the University of Hong Kong and the University of Auckland. The fully on-line course is an introductory, interdisciplinary and interactive course developed specifically for the Universitas 21 consortium.

The course is envisioned as one that will complement students’ specialized areas of learning, and that will challenge students to consider what responsibility they have – within their political, social, cultural and professional contexts – to participate as active global citizens.

It comprises twelve weekly thematic modules, on a WebCT course management platform, and will make use of WebCT communication and collaboration tools to promote instructor-led student discussions, and case-based learning.

Themes include:

·        What is a Citizen?

·        What Does it Mean, to be a “Global Citizen”?

·        The Challenges of Intercultural Communication, Diversity and Multiculturalism

·        Requirements for a Healthy Society

·        Globalization, World Trade and Poverty

·        Consumerism

·        Human Impact on the Environment

·         Sustainability

·         Politics, Participation and Civil Society

Students will be required to participate in weekly topical discussions with peers from different disciplines and institutions, and complete a short weekly assignment. Assessment will be continuous, of both discussion contributions and written work.

The course will run for 12 weeks in the 2005 Fall term.
