Members of the University should take special note that pneumonia is rather common during this time of the year, and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is only one of the possible developments. A fever, though a common feature amongst SARS victims identified so far, is not necessarily a precursor to SARS.
A Task Force has been set up soon after a case of involving a postgraduate student in the Department of Zoology was reported on 21st March, 2003. This Task Force comprises the Director of the University Health Services, the Health Education Officer, Dean of Students, the Registrar, Director of Estates, Director of Safety and the Acting Director of External Relations.
The Task Force has been meeting everyday to draw up guidelines and protocols for students, staff and heads of departments to follow in order to take precaution against possible further cases and to comply with a series of standard procedures in the event of such possibilities. A 'Report from HKU on SARS' will be mounted on the University web page to release the latest information on the University's measures to deal with this matter on campus.
The University Health Service will maintain a 24-hour hotline 6021 5290 (or 2859 2507 during office hours) to answer any medical or general enquiries. The enquiries can also be sent to uhealth@hkusua.hku.hk. Media enquiries to individuals or departments should be referred to the External Relations Office (2859 2600).
